DECEMBER

Scooterville

It is an exciting day when the students get their scooter license and get to go to Scooterville! But first, the students must go to scooter driving school to learn the safety skills and maneuvering skills needed to move around on the scooter both on stomach, bottom, and going forward and backward. Then, they must pass the scooter driving test to show me they can move safely around Scooterville (they even get a lisense!) and then of course they have a few days to use their imaginations and driving skills in Scooterville. They each get turns to be a safety patrol officer, they get to move and construct Scooterville however they please (we had everything from a car wash to a Starbucks in Scooterville this year!) and if they are not safe they are reminded that I can take their license away!

12 Days of Fitness

Parents, need to get some energy out over the holidays....or anytime this winter? Have fun with the 12 Days of Fitness! Your kids did this a few times before the Holiday break (Preschool all the way through 4th grade) and should have a good idea of how the song goes, and will have a chance to share some of the exercises we have been doing all year long to do along the way! It is test to practice some of the skills we learned, and also a test of memory! Whether you are outside or in your basement, you don't need much room to get some ENERGY OUT during the holiday break with this activity. AND, feel free to make up your own exercises to make it your own! And of course, this is a song we can sing all year long!
*Kids, challenge your parents to the 12 Days of Fitness--do you think they can do the movements with you? Can they finish the the whole song? Don't forget to start on the first day of fitness and make your way up to 12...by the end of the song you and your child will have done 12 laps around the room! AND most importantly--don't forget to sing along!!

Here is an example of how the song goes, however it changes every time depending on the age level and ability:

"On the ___ Day of Fitness Mrs. S did with me...."

A big lap around the room
2 toe touches
3 push-ups
4 frog leaps
5 twists and turns (while jumping)
6 second tree pose (yoga style!)
7 leaping lizards (leaping)
8 tippie toes (walking on tip toes)
9 Starbursts (jump into air in shape of star)
10 jumping jacks
11 high knees
12 sideways stretches

To culminate the Basketball unit where we learned and practiced basic basketball skills like dribbling, passing, and shooting (ask your child what BEEF stands for!), we ended on a silly note--doing the Cha-Chat Slide with Basketballs--while your child was advised not to dribble the ball really low, jump, or do the cha-cha while actually playing a basketball game--we sure did have some fun!
