Philosophy/Overview:
The Lower School Physical Education program at St. Paul’s Episcopal Day School will focus on the education of movement skills and the understanding of fundamental concepts related to the execution of these movements. Through the practice of a variety of these learned skills, the goal is to provide a foundation for participation, cooperation, and interest in a lifetime value of games, sports, dance, and recreational activities.
Areas of Focus:
Movement:
Students demonstrate movement skills and patterns (locomotor, non-locomotor, manipulative)
needed to perform a variety of physical activities.
Game Skills:
Students demonstrate appropriate control and knowledge of learned movement skills in various
settings. Through organized and individual practice, students demonstrate understanding of
movement concepts, principles, strategies and tactics as they apply to the performance of various
physical activities.
Sportsmanship:
Students demonstrate self-responsibility and social skills that respect self and others through the
practice of movement and game skills.
Fitness:
Students demonstrate the value of physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression
and/or social interaction throughout the practice of learned physical education skills.
Cross- Curricular Reinforcement of Skills:
MATH:
• Incorporate the Math skills of counting, numeration and patterns when learning to estimate
(pace) time and energy.
• Reinforce basic computation skills while keeping score with different point values.
• Apply problem solving skills when planning and playing games.
LANGUAGE ARTS:
• Through the introduction and practice of movement, vocabulary, such as body parts,
movements and functions are reinforced throughout the Lower School PE program.
• The skill of summarizing is reinforced as directions and rules to games are given.
• Analyzing is introduced as the theory and strategy of games are taught.
LIFE SKILLS:
All life skills from St. Paul’s essential goals are reinforced throughout the Lower School PE program.
