1st through 4th Grade P.E. Curriculum

Program Philosophy

The Physical Education program at St. Paul’s will provide a positive, safe and enjoyable environment that engages each child to be actively involved and equally successful through physical movement. The goal of the 1st through 4th Grade Physical Education program is to help students develop and refine motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities. Through practice in both individual and game settings, the program will promote health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and social interaction through movement and the practice of life skills.

Essential Skills by Grade Level

1st Grade

In first grade, the primary goal is for students to have mastered basic locomotor and non‐locomotor skills and concepts. Spatial awareness will continue to develop. Students are introduced to more physical changes that occur as a result of physical activity. In addition, there is an increased emphasis in following directions and interacting appropriately with classmates regardless of differences or ability in a physical setting.

2nd Grade

In second grade, students demonstrate mastery of basic locomotor and nonlocomotor skills while performing to changing conditions and expectations. Students progress towards mature form in complex manipulative skills, such as foot dribble and catching and throwing. They are able to sustain physical activity for longer periods of time and have a deeper understanding of the benefits of physical activity. Students will learn to be successful while practicing physical activities both independently, in small groups, and team settings.

3rd Grade

In third grade, students seek to improve their motor skills by applying movement concepts to skills. Students work on body management skills in game‐like settings. Specific sports skills are also emphasized. The four components of physical fitness (frequency, intensity, time, and type of physical activity) are introduced and practiced in game like settings. Students will be close to mastering participation in physical activities while working independently, in small groups, and team settings.

4th Grade

In fourth grade, students focus on the importance of motor skills and movement concepts to be successful in physical activity and/or sports. Students develop a deeper understanding of the components of basic fitness principles (frequency, intensity, time, and type of physical activity). Students continue to participate in physical activities while working independently, in small groups, and team settings.
